Exercise Physiology

What is Exercise Physiology?

Exercise physiology is the physiology of physical exercise. It is the study of the acute responses and chronic adaptations to a wide range of exercise conditions.

Exercise physiologists study the effect of exercise on pathology, and the mechanisms by which exercise can reduce or reverse disease progression.

Exercise physiologists are knowledgeable about the effects that exercise has on the musculoskeletal system, as well as on the cardiovascular and endocrine systems.  They can prescribe a course of exercises for either fitness or rehabilitation. Pilates may be recommended, also home based or gym based exercise routines.  They can also advise on behavioural modification programs.

Exercise physiologists can treat medical conditions such as obesity, arthritis, diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis, depression, asthma and cardiovascular diseases, as well as many other conditions.

If you’ve had a chronic medical condition for at least 6 months or it’s terminal, you and your GP can agree to a Chronic Disease Management Plan.  If you have complex care needs in addition to a chronic or terminal disease, your GP may also develop Team Care Arrangements (TCA). This identifies the treatment you get from your GP and at least 2 other health professionals, including an exercise physiologist.

Active Release Therapy (ART)

What is ART® ?

ART® is a patented, state of the art soft tissue system based massage technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves.

What can ART® be used to treat?

ART® can be used to treat headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved quickly and permanently with ART®. These conditions all have one important thing in common: they are often a result of overused muscles.

What can I expect when on an ART® treatment?

Every ART® session is a combination of examination and treatment. The ART® provider uses their hands to evaluate the texture, tightness and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements. These treatment protocols – over 500 specific moves – are unique to ART®. They allow providers to identify and correct the specific problems that are affecting each individual patient. ART® is not a cookie-cutter approach.

Dry Needling

What is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a treatment that involves a very thin needle being pushed through the skin in order to stimulate a trigger point. This form of alternative therapy is used to release tight muscle bands that are associated with trigger point, or hard “knots” within a muscle that can cause pain over a large area. Sometimes these trigger points (or even muscle spasms) can make it difficult to perform everyday tasks because there is pain every time the area is touched, and the pain can even radiate to nearby areas of the body.

What are the benefits of Dry Needling?

Dry needling involves using a thin filiform needle to penetrate the skin and stimulate underlying myofascial trigger points, muscular and connective tissues in order to relieve pain and movement impairments.

Trigger points have been identified in numerous diagnoses, including, migraines, tension-type headaches, carpal tunnel, computer-related disorders, whiplash associated disorders, spinal dysfunction, pelvic pain and other urologic syndromes, post-herpetic neuralgia, complex regional pain syndrome, nocturnal cramps, phantom pain, tendonitis. disk pathology and joint dysfunction.

Infra-Red Sauna

What is an Infra-Red Sauna?

Infra-Red saunas are a type of sauna that uses heat and light to help relax and detoxify the body.  The sauna omits infrared light waves that create heat in the body, causing you to sweat and release stored “toxins.”

Studies have shown that Infra-Red Sauna therapy can assist people with, muscle & joint pain, high blood pressure, diabetes, congestive heart failure, chronic fatigue, depression, anger, poor digestion and cardiovascular disease.

What are the benefits of an Infra-Red Sauna?

Detoxification – Sweating is one of the body’s most natural ways to eliminate toxins, making it a crucial part of detoxification. When compared to traditional Swedish saunas, infrared saunas allow you to eliminate about seven times more toxins.

Relaxation – Infrared sauna therapy promotes relaxation by helping to balance your body’s level of cortisol, your body’s primary stress hormone. The heat generated by the sauna will also help to relax muscles and relieve tension throughout the body, allowing you to relax and de-stress.

Pain Relief – If you suffer from muscle aches or joint pain, infrared saunas can relieve this form of inflammation by increasing circulation and relaxing your muscles.

Weight Loss – The heat generated by an infrared sauna will cause your core temperature to increase, which can also lead to an increased heart rate — the same increase in heart rate that you experience when exercising. When your body has to work harder to lower your core temperature or keep up with an increased heart rate, your body will burn more calories, resulting in weight loss.

Improved Circulation – As the heat from infrared saunas increases your core body temperature, your circulation will increase along with it. Consistent infrared sauna sessions, especially in the middle-infrared level, can stimulate blood flow, improve muscle recovery, and decrease pain and inflammation after intense exercise.

Skin Purification – Infrared sauna technology can help purify your skin by eliminating toxins from your pores and increasing circulation, resulting in clearer, softer, and healthier-looking skin.
